U2 - No Line On The Horizon (2009)

Ya salió el esperado nuevo álbum de U2, No Line On The Horizon. A decir verdad, tenía mis reservas con este disco. Como con todo lo que se mueve en torno a la industria de la música Pop. A mi juicio, U2 hace mucho tiempo que no ofrecía nada nuevo, sus últimos discos supuestamente experimentales o no, seguían en mayor o mayor medida una fórmula, la fórmula U2, que hasta cierto punto tendría sentido, pues les ha valido ganar una buena plata, pero a la vez habría contribuido a hacerles perder seguidores, quienes como yo, buscamos siempre un sonido diferente en lo que escuchamos y no más de lo mismo. Me ha gustado la banda U2 desde el principio. Y nunca quisiera tener que llegar a llamarles una banda vendida, de pose. Cosa que no creo que voy a hacer... por ahora.

Bueno, el asunto es que este nuevo disco me ha sorprendido gratamente, pues aunque mantienen el sello estilístico de U2, podemos encontrar un novedoso y cuidadoso trabajo en las armonías, vocales con pasajes que a veces me recuerdan a Los Beatles o a Electric Light Orchestra. Y quizás, quizás, se deba a alguna influencia subconsciente, (aunque lo dudo) pues fué grabado en parte en Abbey Road, el legendario estudio de "Los Cuatro de Liverpool". Y lo dudo por la participación de Brian Eno en su grabación. Vaya uno a saber lo meticuloso y cuidadoso que es este tío cuando se pone las pilas.

La Canción que mas me ha gustado, y posiblemente la que tenga mayor pegada, es Get On Your Boots. Excelente el trabajo de Clayton con el bajo, además, muy acertados y refrescantes los riffs y rasgueos de guitarras de The Edge, con un sonido diferente, dando soporte a una melodía pegajosa. No es que sea algo que no se haya hecho, sino el haber sabido aprovechar inteligentemente esos recursos. Para ser U2, son guitarras que suenan diferentes, buenos riffs. Mullen hace un excelente trabajo en la batería y no es una canción lineal, homogénea, como acostumbra U2, sino compleja, con muchos cambios en el ritmo.

Pero también se puede notar, esta vez sin lugar a dudas, una entrada decididamente Page-Zeppeliniana en Stand Up Comedy, con coros a lo Plant. Es la segunda canción que más me ha gustado. Digna también de mencionar es la canción Breathe, con un sonido muy eléctrico.

En la canción White As Snow se puede notar sutilmente en la forma de cantar de Bono influencias de Robert Plant cuando canta baladas lentas. Pero repito, muy sutilmente. Reitero que es una apreciacion muy personal, ya que llevo muchos años escuchando a Plant. De todas formas, a mi juicio, este no es el estilo de cantar usual en Bono. En cuanto a las letras, no voy a decir nada por ahora.

En conclusión, este es un disco que vale la pena. A muchos fans quizás no les guste por ser diferente, pero a los cansados de lo mismo, a lo nuevos fans, seguro que les encantará.

And waited out the new U2 album, No Line On The Horizon. Truthfully, I had my reservations about this record. As with anything that moves around the pop music industry I think U2 has long offered nothing new, his last supposedly experimental or not discs, remained more or less a formula, the formula U2, which to some extent makes sense, because they have earned a lot of money with it, but it would have helped to lose followers, who like me, always look for a different sound to what we hear rather more of the same. I liked the band U2 from the beginning. And I would never wish to call them a sold band, a hypocrital band. Thing that I do not think I'm going to do ... for now.

Well, the matter is that with this new album I was pleasantly surprised, because although maintaining the seal style of U2, we can find a new and careful work on the harmonies, with vocal passages that sometimes remind me of The Beatles or Electric Light Orchestra. And perhaps, perhaps, be due to some subconscious influence (although I doubt it) because it was partly recorded in Abbey Road, the legendary studio of The Four from Liverpool. And I doubt it because the involvement of Brian Eno in this recording. God knows what that is meticulous and careful when this guy gets the batteries.

The song I liked most, and possibly having more punch, is Get On Your Boots. Clayton's excellent work with the bass, also very insightful and refreshing guitar riffs from The Edge, with a different sound, supporting a catchy melody. Not that it's something that has not been made, but have harnessed these resources wisely. For U2, they are different sounding guitars, good riffs. Mullen does an excellent job on drums and this song is not linear, homogeneous, as accustomed U2, but complex, with many changes in rhythm.

But it can be noticed, this time without a doubt, a strongly Page-Zeppelinian entry in the song Stand-Up Comedy, with a chorus Plant-styled. It is the second song I liked most. Also worthy of mention is the song Breathe, with a very electric sound.

In the song White As Snow, it can be subtly noted in the Bono's style of singing influences of Robert Plant when he sings slow ballads. But again, very subtly. Once again, this is a very personal thougth, because I counted many years listening to Plant. Anyway, in my opinion, this is not the usual style of singing in Bono. As for the lyrics, I will not say anything for now.

In conclusion, this is an album worthwhile. Many fans would dislike it because to be different, but the people tired of the same, and the new fans, will be satisfied for sure.
